What is Marula Oil?

Marula oil comes from the marula fruit tree (Sclerocarya birrea) that is native to parts of southern Africa. The marula tree used to be linked to fertility and happy marriage in ancient times. The fermented fruit of the marula tree was also used to intoxicate elephants, as they are known to love the fruit.

Many parts of the marula tree are used as ingredients in food and traditional medicine in different parts of Africa. Each marula fruit contains a hard, brown nut with pliable, white kernels in the middle.

Marula oil is predominantly extracted from these kernels, but can also be acquired in the nut’s outer husk. Marula oil is rich in protein and can easily absorb into anything, making it an ideal skin and hair treatment. The light-yellow oil has a faint nutty scent, is fast-absorbing and contains fatty acids that have moisturizing and emollient properties.

What Are the Benefits of Marula Oil?

Marula oil comes with a light texture and rich moisture content properties so it has turned into a popular treatment for skin, hair and nails. The oil is used as an ingredient in many different cosmetic products. It can also be purchased as an essential oil.

Some benefits that come with it include: amino acids L-arginine and glutamic acid, which have hydrating, anti-aging properties and there are also fatty acids, including palmitic, stearic, oleic and myristic acids, which have emollient and moisturizing benefits. The amino acids all work to strengthen and stabilize the skin’s barrier.

Antioxidants are present as well, such as phenolic compounds and vitamins E and C, which fight free radicals and may get rid of any skin damage caused by the ultraviolet rays of the sun and pollution.

The oil is easily absorbent and lightweight. This makes marula oil an ideal moisturizer for both dry or aging skin. It is a great moisturizer for oily skin as well and treating acne because it won’t clog pores. Antimicrobial properties are there to fight off the bacteria that contribute to the formation of pimples, whiteheads and blackheads. You can also use the oil as a lip moisturizer.

Another benefit is it can smooth and soften fine lines, which is how it provides anti-aging benefits. This helps to prevent the breakdown of collagen and elastin in the skin. Marula oil can also prevent stretch marks, keeps the skin hydrated and well-nourished, boosts elasticity and restores a natural glow. It has the ability to reduce any irritation, itching and dryness as well.

Marula oil can help nourish hair from root to tip, without making it overly greasy. The oil hydrates and moisturizes the hair. Dry or frizzy hair can benefit from this.

It is also effective at strengthening nail beds and cuticles. This may help to get rid of any hangnails or if there is any dry skin around nails.

How to Use the Oil

You can add a few drops of marula oil and mix it with your shampoo, or buy shampoos that include the oil in its formula. This goes for moisturizer as well, you can mix a few drops or purchase products with it. It can be applied as a makeup base since it absorbs quickly.

Another option is rubbing marula oil into your cuticles after removing nail polish while it is drying. You can also use it overnight to soften nail beds.

The Best Marula Oil Products

1. Drunk Elephant Virgin Marula Antioxidant Face Oil

This product is beloved by many, as it is one of the best face oils. It is a face oil filled with critical antioxidants and omegas 6 and 9 that moisturizes, nourishes and balances the skin while restoring a natural glow. All of Drunk Elephant’s products primarily include marula oil (the brand’s name comes from the idea mentioned previously where elephants are intoxicated when eating marula fruit).

Pure marula oil may be ideal for those with sensitive skin especially since this one has no extra fragrance. Many reviewers noticed only after a few days said their skin felt softer and looked dewier.

2. The Body Shop Moisture Foundation SPF 15

The Moisture Foundation SPF 15 by The Body Shop is perfect for those with dry skin. It is one of the most moisturizing foundations because of marula oil. In addition to the oil, it includes a blend of silicones that smooths and hydrates the skin all day, leaving it dewy and supple. You should still use a moisturizer before putting on the foundation, though.

3. Lancer Intensive Night Treatment with Hylaplex and Marula Oil

The best time to use this product is at night, which is when your skin will reap all the anti-aging benefits marula oil has to offer. This product is known to boost collagen and elastin. In this night cream it does just that, all while adding extra hydration for dehydrated skin.

Marula oil, a large amount of hyaluronic acid and peptides all work together to lock in moisture. These all provide a moisture barrier, helping the skin retain healthy hydration for a smoother, plumper appearance and a natural glow.

4. Acure Marula Oil

This product is a slightly more affordable version of marula oil, priced at only $16 for a 1-ounce bottle. To get the most out of the product, apply the oil right after washing your face. You can dot the oil all over the area you want to cover, then rub it in and connect the dots. Then, proceed to layer your other products over it. Since the oil absorbs into the skin so well, it helps other products you put on over it absorb better as well.

If you apply an oil before your anti-aging cream, the oil molecules sink into the skin letting active ingredients such as retinol, glycolic acid and vitamin C submerge themselves into the skin and closer to the collagen-producing fibroblasts, all without irritating the surface, only hydrating it even more.

5. Georgette Klinger Marula Cream Cleanser

Cleansing oils are a great choice to remove a full face of makeup; the oil quickly and effectively breaks down the oils in the makeup. If you don’t love the feel or texture of using oil as a cleanser, this creamier formula is perfect to try. It’s packed with marula oil so you get those same oil-dissolving benefits (plus all of the benefits marula oil has for your skin in general), but in a creamier base that rinses completely cleanly.

You can wash away impurities while marula oil rapidly moisturizes your skin, softening and calming dry or sensitive spots with a blend of omega fatty acids and oleic acid. Soothing chamomile is also included, making it an especially great pick for anyone with sensitive or dry skin. Gardenia and lavender are present as well that will soothe and nourish the skin with antioxidants, leaving skin silky-smooth, calm, and glowing.
